Pest & Weed Control in the North Shore & Northwest Suburbs

Weed and pest pressure is far easier to prevent than to reverse, and in this climate prevention is almost entirely a question of dates. Miss the window and no amount of product makes it up.

What it covers

The work included

  • Pre-emergent crabgrass control timed to soil temperature rather than to a calendar date
  • Broadleaf weed control for dandelion, clover, plantain and creeping charlie
  • Preventive grub control applied ahead of the midsummer egg hatch
  • Curative treatment where grub damage is already showing and the grubs are still feeding near the surface
  • Fertilizer and weed control run as one program, so the turf itself is doing part of the work
  • Spot treatment of identified problems in preference to blanket applications
  • Bed weed management alongside mulching and edging
  • Label re-entry intervals given at the time of each application
Heavy weed growth along a fence line before treatment

Why it matters here

Crabgrass germinates once soil temperature at two inches holds near fifty-five degrees for several consecutive days, which up here usually means early to mid-April. A pre-emergent applied after that has already missed.

Japanese beetles lay in the last ten days of June and the first week of July. The eggs hatch two to four weeks later, and the damage surfaces in mid-August as turf you can roll back like carpet because the roots underneath are gone.

A preventive product has to be in the soil before that hatch, and the product decides when. Chlorantraniliprole needs weeks to move down through the profile and goes out from April to early June. Imidacloprid is applied closer to the hatch itself.

Before you ask

Pest & Weed Control questions

How many treatments does a lawn need in a season?

Fewer than most programs sell, if the right dates are hit, and more than anyone wants, if they are missed. The number depends on the lawn, the weed pressure and how the spring actually ran, which is why a fixed count sold up front in February is a scheduling convenience rather than an agronomic plan. What matters is being on the property at the points where an application does something: before crabgrass germinates, before the grub hatch, and in autumn when perennial broadleaf weeds are moving sugars to their roots.

Is treatment safe around children and pets?

Every product carries a re-entry interval on its label, and that interval exists for exactly this question. It is set by the registrant and tested, rather than estimated on site, so the right answer is always the one printed on the product being used that day, which gets confirmed at the time of the application rather than promised in advance on a website. If there is a specific concern. A dog that eats grass, a toddler, a vegetable bed at the edge of the lawn, say so at the walkthrough, because it can change what gets used and where.

Can weeds be controlled without treatment?

Partly, and the cultural side does more than people expect. Crabgrass seed needs light to germinate, so mowing at two to three inches shades the soil surface and suppresses a real share of it before anything is applied. Thick turf leaves no bare ground for a weed to establish in, which makes aeration and overseeding weed control by another name. Treatment handles what cultural practice will not, established perennial weeds, and anything already holding ground.

How do I know whether I have grubs?

Mid to late August is when it shows. The pattern is irregular brown patches that do not green up after rain, in a lawn that is otherwise watered, and crucially, the turf lifts away with no root resistance, because the roots have been chewed off. The strongest tell is often not the grass at all: raccoons and skunks tearing the lawn open overnight are digging for something. Cutting a square-foot flap and folding it back settles it, and the count in that square foot decides whether treatment is warranted.

What is creeping charlie and why does it keep coming back?

It is ground ivy, and it spreads by creeping stems that root as they go, which is why pulling it mostly produces fragments that re-root. It prefers shade and damp, so it tends to own the north side of a house and the area under trees, and those conditions are also why the turf there is thin enough to let it in. Timing is the lever: autumn applications, roughly late September into early November, work best, because the plant is actively moving sugars down to its roots and carries the product with them. Expect more than one season.

Will one treatment fix a lawn that is mostly weeds?

No, and it is worth saying so plainly. Once weeds hold something like half the lawn, killing them leaves you with half a lawn of bare ground, which is simply an invitation for the next flush of seed. At that point the honest route is renovation rather than treatment: clear what is there, relieve the compaction, and seed into the late-summer window when cool-season grass establishes fastest. It costs more up front and it is the only version that is still holding in three years.
